Edwige Lesiourd Photographer

Edwige Lesiourd, a photographer and multi-talented artist, has explored a variety of professional paths throughout her life. Among these experiences, teaching philosophy in secondary schools, working in prison education and stone sculpture have been the most formative. These varied paths have enabled her to develop a deep understanding of the complexity of the world, where light and shadow intermingle to create reality. Teaching philosophy taught her to understand the world through guiding principles, contrasts and differences – essential elements for giving meaning to our existence. She realised that these structures are necessary for reality to take shape and become comprehensible. Without them, reality would remain a shapeless and incomprehensible mass, and thought would be in a perpetual state of turmoil, without any points of reference. However, Edwige Lesiourd has discovered that photography and writing are fields where these structures are not required in quite the same way. Through her photographs, she explores the limits of identity within matter, whether in nature or through self-portraits. She questions what constitutes our ‘identity’ within matter—a matter of which we are a part, just like trees, magpies or badgers. This matter is shaped and sculpted within our memory and our neural network, thereby forming an internal, mental, symbolic and emotional structure. Edwige Lesiourd’s keen eye captures the raw and incisive moment, giving the impression of progressing in our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. However, she also recognises the illusions that inevitably take root in reality, often masking the authenticity and depth of being beneath artificial forms. Her artistic work explores these layers of reality and illusion, seeking to strip away the veils that conceal the true essence of existence. Edwige Lesiourd thus invites us to question our perception of the world and of ourselves through her photographs and writings, encouraging us to look beyond appearances to discover the richness and complexity of reality.
