Edwige Lesiourd, photographer and versatile artist, has explored a wide range of professional horizons throughout her life. Among these experiences, teaching philosophy in secondary schools, prison education and stone sculpture have been the most formative. These varied experiences have enabled her to develop a deep understanding of the complexity of the world, where light and shadow combine to create reality.
Teaching philosophy taught her to see the world in terms of guidelines, contrasts and differences, essential elements for giving meaning to our existence. She understood that these structures are necessary for reality to take shape and become comprehensible. Without them, reality would remain a shapeless, unintelligible mass, and thought would be in perpetual turmoil, without reference points.
However, Edwige Lesiourd has discovered that photography and writing are fields where these structures are not needed in the same way. Through her photographs, she explores the limits of identity in matter, whether in nature or through self-portraits. She questions what constitutes our 'identity' within matter, a matter of which we are a part, just like trees, magpies or badgers. This matter is shaped and sculpted in our memory and our neural network, forming an internal, mental, symbolic and emotional structure.
Edwige Lesiourd's sharp eye captures the raw, incisive moment, offering the impression of progress in our knowledge of ourselves and the world around us. However, she also recognises the illusions that inevitably creep into reality, often masking the authenticity and depth of being in artificial forms.
Her artistic work explores these layers of reality and illusion, seeking to uproot the veils that mask the true essence of existence. Through her photographs and writings, Edwige Lesiourd invites us to question our perception of the world and ourselves, encouraging us to look beyond appearances to discover the richness and complexity of reality.
