Les Boucles de la Sarthe leisure area

Saint-Léonard-des-Bois

 

On the banks of the Sarthe River, in the heart of the Alpes Mancelles and the village of Saint-Léonard-des-Bois, you can settle down on one of the tables or on your tablecloth to enjoy your picnic while taking in the view of the village’s two mounts, Narbonne and Haut-Fourché.

Before or after your break, you can enjoy of the hiking trails and the many outdoor activities available around the village, climb Mont Narbonne to meet the animals in the wildlife park, or go and discover the Domaine du Gasseau.

Piacé

 

Surrounded by the Bienne river, one of the small tributary of the Sarthe river, this picnic area will welcome you for an original meal! Indeed, by the water’s edge, a friendly little spot with games and picnic tables … But be warned, you may be in for a surprise, as you’re not sitting on “common” tables, but rather on the very special games that are part of the Piacé le Radieux contemporary art center! Take a seat at the “Villa Parmentier” for a moment of sheltered relaxation.

Before or after your break, take the opportunity to discover the forty or so works on the contemporary art trail scattered throughout the village: the “Grotte de nez” (nose cave), the giant breeze block or the Keeque, that funny stick-man, symbol of Piacé le Radieux.

Sans Souci leisure area

Fresnay-sur-Sarthe

 

On the banks of the Sarthe river, near the Sans Souci campsite, this area offers a few picnic tables as well as games for kids. Fishing enthusiasts can cast their lines in the river (a minimum day permit is required), and those who prefer to laze around can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Before or after your break, you can head back up to the medieval center of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe to discover its heritage and history, or cruise the Sarthe river in a canoe or electric boat to appreciate the Petite Cité de Caractère from another angle. For the younger ones, the mini-golf course or swimming pool will allow you to enjoy the place a little longer.

Gué Ory leisure area

Sougé-le-Ganelon

 

On the banks of the Sarthe river, on the Gué Ory site, this quiet leisure area surrounded by trees offers a friendly place for a family picnic: tables, benches, children’s games, petanque court…. Located right on the banks of the Sarthe river, fishing enthusiasts can cast their lines here (please note that a minimum of a daily fishing permit is required).

Before or after your break, take advantage of Gué Ory’s central location to discover the various must-sees of our region: head for Saint-Paul-le-Gaultier to enjoy our hiking trails, head for Fresnay-sur-Sarthe to discover its heritage, or let yourself be guided to Saint-Léonard-des-Bois for a stroll in the heart of the Alpes Mancelles.

Around this 1st category fishing pond, take time for a picnic in peace and quiet, or almost so, as the ducks may soon come to keep you company. The children can enjoy the playground in complete safety.

Before or after your break, you can walk around the pond, go fishing (a daily fishing permit is required) or take one of our hiking trails to discover the landscapes of the Alpes Mancelles and the Sarthe department countryside. And take a few minutes to enjoy the view of the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul church overlooking the lake.

Oisellerie fishing pond

Ancinnes

 

At the northern end of our territory, just a few kilometers from Alençon, the communal Oisellerie pond offers an ideal setting for a picnic break: wooden tables, the chance to fish (note that you’ll need at least a daily fishing permit), in a quiet, wooded area. You can also take the time to walk around the pond to enjoy this beautiful environment.

Before or after your break, you can discover the surrounding area, including the Manoir de Couesme, listed on the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques (ISMH) or the Perseigne state-owned forest, ideal for walks particularly in summer to keep cool and in autumn to enjoy the beautiful colors.

Chérancé

 

The Chérancé pond, fed by the Bienne river, a tributary of the Sarthe river, offers a calm and relaxing setting for your picnic break, with a few tables available and the possibility of fishing (please note you’ll need at least a daily fishing permit).

Before or after your break, you can take advantage of the Haute Sarthe Alpes Mancelles greenway, between Chérancé and Les Mées, and stroll along this former railway line reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. This 5.2 kilometers route is an extension of the  Saosnois greenway. In all, over 17 kilometers are available to discover the beautiful Sarthe department countryside all the way to Mamers.

In the Domaine du Gasseau

Saint-Léonard-des-Bois

 

The Domaine du Gasseau is the must-see family venue in the Alpes Mancelles, and so it’s the ideal place for a picnic! At your disposal: several tables, a café-nature boutique to enjoy an ice cream or a cold drink and numerous cultural and sporting activities.

Before or after your break, set off to discover the Domaine du Gasseau: tree climbing, pony club, interpretation and vanupieds trails! But also exhibitions, free concerts in summer and a garden to discover all year round. Before you leave, go to the café-nature boutique to discover local products and handcrafted creations (open from April to September).

Beaumont-sur-Sarthe

 

Hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the town center, the Escargot park promises a relaxing setting for your picnic. With a few tables and children’s games, it’s the ideal place for a family break.

Before or after your break, enjoy the peace and quiet of the park to relax, or venture out into the streets of Beaumont-sur-Sarthe to discover its beautiful heritage: its 11th-century castle (private) overlooking the Sarthe river, its Romanesque bridge, its feudal clod and its halles.

Saint-Christophe-du-Jambet

 

In this park, located near the church and the Château (private), you can enjoy a peaceful lunch while taking in the superb panorama of the Sarthe department countryside.

Before or after your break, discover the Saint-Christophe Church, dating from the 12th century and built of Roussard sandstone, a local stone. If you’d like to go for a stroll, you can join the former railway line, now an interpretation trail lined with explanatory panels on fauna, flora and history, it will then take you all the way to Ségrie.
