Getting there

Please note!

Due to a recent change in the management of the Étang de Carrouge, it is no longer accessible for parking.

We advise you to start the tour in Fresnay-sur-Sarthe, at the entrance to the route de Piacé (near Anjou Maine Céréales). You can park there and join the circuit by walking a few hundred meters along the old railroad track, which is accessible via an embankment at the level of the remaining pillar of an old railway bridge, at the entrance to the route de Piacé (image).

Points of interest on the circuit

Saint-Germain Church

The Romanesque church was built in the 12th century. Since then, it has undergone few modifications, apart from the addition of side chapels at the end of the Middle Ages. Very classical in plan, it has two original features: a tower and a porch.

Archaic crosses

Several of these crosses can be found in the commune. Sometimes asymmetrical in shape, sometimes surmounted by a circle known as the “eternity circle”, their significance is sometimes difficult to ascertain, as they signal crossroads and therefore traffic routes, or mark pilgrimage paths…

The church tower

Today, this round tower houses the church bells, but its original purpose was essentially defensive and military: it served as a watchtower to alert the Fresnay stronghold in the event of an attack.
